MARCH 2000

Beautiful New Catalog
Due to some shipping problems in January, I was unable to hand out updated Blue Sterling Nursery catalogs at several of the trade shows. But don’t worry. We still have a great selection of material available for Spring shipment.

There are over 50 new plants offered in this catalog! It seems as if every page has at least one new plant listed.

Dozens of new photos are presented throughout the catalog. You can enjoy and see what many of the more unusual plants look like.

Spring shipping season is just around the corner so if you don’t have an order placed now is the time to get your material reserved. Customers with existing orders should consider adding some new and unusual material to your order that may not have been available previously. Spice up you plant selection and set yourself apart from the competition.

NM PRO Reprint Available
Did you miss the great article featuring Blue Sterling Nursery last year in NM PRO? There are over a dozen conifers offered by Blue Sterling Nursery featured in the article. The write up is accompanied by some fine photography by Jim Smith, the owner of Blue Sterling Nursery. Many of you have met Jim and his wife Barb at Mid Am or the CENTS show. I have a number of the reprints available and would be happy to send you a copy if you missed it the first time around.

What’s new?

There is a lot happening at Blue Sterling! January was a busy month. Not only was everyone running all over the country to trade shows but there was plenty of activity in New Jersey as well.

Ground was being moved and prepared for a major expansion. At the CENTS show I was able to look over an amazing set of greenhouse plans. The greenhouse area will allow Blue Sterling to do most of their propagation in house. Close to 28 acres of poly houses that measure 30’ wide, 400’ long, 15-18’ tall are being added. A water retention pond 500’x80’x12’ deep is also being built.

This will allow Blue Sterling to have better control over propagation of "Genetically Superior Cultivars" and they will be able to grow and hold material for a longer period of time. Soon Blue Sterling will be able to offer the larger conifers and Japanese maples so many of you ask for.

Looking For Plants?
This is shaping up to be another year with many plant shortages as I’m sure many of you already know. There are still plenty of good plants available but not any 2" Red Sunset Maples!!!! I still have people looking for the impossible and somewhat surprised by the shortages.

I have suggested this before and still think it is one of the best ways to weather the shortage of the high demand items. Take this as an opportunity to discover and use some of the often overlooked and forgotten plants. There are many plants that get overused because growers, designers, landscapers, and retailers are in a rut or they choose plants that are easy to sell. Lets face it….just because a plant is not available this spring does not mean it is the best plant selection for its intended use. Remember the Bradford Pear? Every retail customer asked for it so every wholesale grower grew it. Just because it was popular did not mean it was the best! Now Bradford has been passed up by better selections.

Sherman Nursery still has a good selection of bare root plants available for spring shipment. Lake County Nursery has many B&B and container trees and shrubs available. I have a summer container list available also and suggest you get your material booked early. The spring shortages will soon become summer shortages!

Order now for 2001
Now is the time to think about Summer/Fall 2000 and Spring 2001. Book your orders NOW!!! Order what you think you will be using in next year based on your past buying habits. You can always make changes to your order as necessary.
New Reference Guide
Sherman Nursery has completed the long awaited update to their popular "Plant Reference Guide". It is packed full of helpful information including nursery stock care, detailed plant descriptions, charts, lists, and lots of color photographs. Some of the photos used are from www.plantcafe.com. "Hats off" to everyone involved! There are no prices in this catalog so you can use it with ease around your customers. The cost of the guide is $10.00. Available to those in the trade only.
Shipping season is here
Sherman Nursery will be soon be shipping at full capacity. We are already loading 3 to 4 semi loads of bare root stock a day. Lake County Nursery will begin digging in the next week if ground conditions continue to improve. Loads will begin moving around the first week of March.
Customer update form
I am going to continue to distribute a "Customer Update" form in my mailings and when I stop in to see everyone. With all the area code, email, and personnel changes this really has helped me to keep your account information up to date. When you have any changes at your business please take a moment and fill in the form and fax it to my office. Thanks for your help!!!
