Book Suggestions

Here is a list of books you will find helpful to have in your library. The first three are
a must. They will answer most of your everyday  (and many unusual) questions ....
or get you pointed in the right direction to find the answer.

Manual of Woody Landscape Plants:
Their Identification, ornamental characteristics, culture, propagation and uses.
Michael A. Dirr
Stipes Publishing Company
A must have book. Buy the hardcover. My first copy was softcover and it fell apart from constant use! I had Mike sign my second copy.

Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia
Donald Wyman
MacMillan Publishing Co.
A must have book. Offers 1200 pages of information on every subject you know nothing about!

10,000 Gardening Questions
Marjorie J. Dietz, editor
Doubleday and Co, Inc.
A must have book for garden centers. Another 1500 pages of nearly every question a customer could ask you.

Taylor's Guide
Houghton Miffin Co.
An ever expanding series of handy books packed with tons of color photographs. Covers many subjects like: shrubs, trees, bulbs, annuals .....
I stopped at my 10th volume.

Conifers
The Illustrated Encyclopedia
2 volumes
D M van Gelderen
J R P van Hoey Smith
Timber Press
Lost when it comes to conifers? Buy this $125.00, 2 volume, 700 page book loaded with 3 or 4  photographs on each page. It's not much on text so your preschooler will enjoy it too! Don't buy the older 1 volume book. I'll sell you mine! The new edition is well worth the extra money. You can see many of the conifer varieties offered by Blue Sterling Nursery here.

Street Tree Factsheets
Gerhold, Lacasse, Wandell editors
Contact: Publications Office
              112 Agricultural Ad. Bldg.
              University Park, PA 16802
If you only have $20.00 to spend send it here. Good photos and information.  I have a number of friends who contributed to this book. I work for 2 of them and you can buy your plants from their nursery!!!!

Dwarf and Unusual
Conifers Coming of Age
Sandra McLean Cutler
Barton-Bradley Crossroads Pub. Co.
Another autographed book from an interesting lady. Sandra discovered conifers 5 years before writing a book on the subject! Photos and information focusing on the conifer collection at the United States National Arboretum.

Dictionary of Plant Names
Allen J. Coombes
Timber Press
A great little book on the meaning and pronunciation off all those scientific names we use. Bottom line ... it's still easier to learn by hearing the word used. But this helps.

The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses
John Greenlee
Rodale Press
Should give you a good start on grasses with photos and text. Lake County Nursery sell many of the varieties listed in this book.

Practical Woody Plant Propagation for Nursery Growers
Bruce Macdonald
Timber Press
Reminds me of a college text book. If you can't find your answer here you're blazing a new trail in propagation.

The pruning of trees, shrubs, and conifers.
George E. Brown
Timber Press
I picked this up for the flight home a couple of summers ago. I have not used it much since but I don't get too many pruning questions. Good for reference.

Manual of Herbaceous Ornamental Plants
Dr. Steven M. Still
Stipes Publishing Co
The "Dirr" of perennials. The book has sat unopened in my office for almost a year. Too busy selling plants to read about them! But you should find it great reference. Includes a section of around 500 color photos.

Know it and grow it II
Carl E. Whitcomb, Ph. D.
Lacebark Publications
This was one of the first plant books I ever purchased. It is well used and I read it cover to cover .... more than once. I have met Dr. Whitcomb on several occasions and own several of his books. I would still have to recommend you buy Dirr's book first. I see a volume III is out now but have not had a chance to look it over.

Production of Landscape Plants
Carl E. Whitcomb, Ph. D.
Lacebark Publications
Sherman Nursery customers who want to field grow their nursery stock should find this book helpful.

Plant Production in Containers
Carl E. Whitcomb, Ph. D.
Lacebark Publications
Read about drainage, salts, fertilizers and more. You will learn a thing or two about container growing here. Another book for Sherman Nursery bare root customers.

Building and Repairing Kentucky Rock Fences
Richard N. Tufnell
Drystone Masonry Conservancy, Inc
(Joseph Beth Booksellers, Lexington, KY 606-273-2911)
Wow, ever drive around Lexington, KY? Horses, farms, and rock fences. I was taken by the rock fences and a couple of years ago spent about $100.00 on books about them. This jewel is nothing fancy but could make you a better stone wall builder.

Japanese Maples
J. D. Vertrees
Timber Press
You will learn something about all those wonderful Japanese Maples on the market. Blue Sterling Nursery sells many of the listed varieties. Good photos and information.

The Hosta Book
Edited by Paul Aden
Timber Press
An enjoyable book on a great subject. Covers a wide variety of topics related to hostas.
